Hispanic Spiritual Formation Sharing

Groups involved: St. Michael Parish (Cleveland) and St. Mary Parish (Painesville)
Contact Person: Sr. Reean Coyne, SND

Description: This grant initiative is between St. Michael Parish (Cleveland) and St. Mary Parish (Painesville) to increase the cooperative spiritual formation between the two parishes by providing transportation to and from the two parishes.

Women's Schools Together

Groups Involved: Magnificat High School (Lakewood) and Regina High School (South Euclid)
Contact Person: Sr. Patricia Garrahan, SND

Description: This project is designed to encourage young women to see their connectedness to the church in bringing about the transformation of society while breaking down the traditional East/West boundaries, finding unity in "Mary" as a model of female discipleship. Planning and implementation will be done by a Steering Committee formed by student and faculty representatives from each school.

National Issues Study and Advocacy Forums

Groups Involved: Epiphany (Cleveland) and St. Ignatius of Antioch (Cleveland)

Description: Resurrection and Epiphany parishes have been in a sister relationship for several years. Both parishes believe that it is time to take social action and social advocacy. In the spirit of The Church in the City, St. Ignatius has joined the partnership to add to the diversity of the group and to insure that advocacy on issues is broadly grounded. The project involves: building community, raising awareness, planning forums and implementation. The following months will have the following focus: Sept.: The American Family; Oct.: Youth Violence; Nov-Feb: Implement advocacy.

Young in Spirit

Groups Involved: Holy Spirit Parish (Avon Lake) and the Vietnamese Catholic Community, (Cleveland)
Contact Person: Rev. James H. Beatty

Description: The intent of this project is to use the experience of the Holy Spirit's older adult group, "Young Spirits" to assist approx. 50 Vietnamese older adults to form their own older adult group as a way to overcome isolation due to language barriers and to hold at least 6 common events. A representative Steering Committee comprised of members of both communities has been formed to facilitate this.

One City of God

Groups Involved: Cleveland Central Catholic High School (Cleveland) and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School (Chardon)

Description: This project is about building community, relationships and seeking common ground for the Freshman Class from both schools. Four groups of students from each school will conduct a one day class exchange twice during the school year. Through dialogue, interaction, prayer, reflection and written evaluation, the goal is to have student of both schools break down preconceptions, stereotypes and prejudices and eventually learn to respect diversity. The Steering Committee is composed of representatives from the staff, student body and faculty.

National Issues, Local Links

Groups Involved: St. Louis Parish (Cleveland Heights) and St. Augustine Parish (Cleveland) and St. Julie Billiart Parish (North Olmsted)

Description: This project brings together 3 diverse parishes to share and learn from each other's experiences and conduct dialogue on national issues relating the issues to local realities. The project is inter-generational as well as interracial. The focus on the project is to help members of each parish become more familiar with Catholic Social Teaching. Quarterly meetings are held to discuss issues and formulate a plan for joint action.

Hungering for Justice

Groups Involved: St. William Parish (Euclid) St. Aloysius-St. Agatha (Cleveland)

Description: Using the St. Aloysius-St. Agatha Hunger Center as a base, the intent is to build communication, appreciation and initiate joint activities between the parishes. A joint Retreat is planned as well as joint liturgies at each place. Workshops are also planned to raise awareness about the injustice and violence of poverty and racism.

Educational Empowerment & Continuum

Groups Involved: Notre Dame College (South Euclid), Metro Catholic Grade School (Cleveland), Julie Billiart Grade School (Lyndhurst) and Regina High School (South Euclid)

Description: The project is designed to collaboratively assist students to attain greater academic achievement in a mutual manner. Creating an opportunity where diverse populations will be enriched by each other. The format of the project includes retreats, shared projects, professional and academic enrichment. The Steering Committee is comprised of students, faculty, staff and family members.

Helping Families Grow

Groups Involved: St. Patrick Parish (Cleveland) and St. Joseph Parish (Strongsville)
Contact Person: Fr. Mark DiNardo

Description: This is building on a larger project of educational and self enrichment. The project would use funds to buy computers, software, a TV and VCR to expand tutoring/mentoring, parenting/life skills and socialization/motivation skills. This will be done in a group manner between people from both parishes.

Catholic Life Teen 4 Akron Area Parishes

Groups Involved: Annunciation Parish (Akron) St. John the Baptist, (Akron) St. Matthew, (Akron) and St. Paul (Akron) Parish

Description: This initiative will expand the programming of the Catholic Life Teen Program (a national program) and is a three year effort. The goals include increasing youth participants, holding a retreat, providing continuing education and developing joint service projects while exploring the tenets of Catholic Social Teaching.

Community Building Through the Arts

Groups Involved: Immaculate Conception (Madison) Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School (Cleveland)
Contact Person: Mrs. Johnna Hopczak

Description: This project attempts to bring 15 city and 15 suburban Catholic high school students together to learn their similarities, understand their differences and commit to their oneness in Christ. This includes a series of events, meetings and a culminating summer camp. This is a three year project attempting to retain the same 30 students.

Common Ground

Groups Involved: St. Paschal Baylon (Highland Heights) and Christ the King (East Cleveland)

Description: A multi-year effort to bring understanding, respect for diversity, and enrichment to one another with the intent to prepare both congregations for common liturgical worship. Workshops will be offered on liturgical principles, joint preparation and a sharing of liturgical gifts and ministries.

Experiencing Diversity Youth to Youth

Groups Involved: St. Basil the Great Parish (Brecksville) and St. Catherine Parish (Cleveland)
Contact Person: Ms. Cynthia J. Dennhardt

Description: The two parishes have been participating in a parish partnership for the past 1 1/2 years. This is a three year project designed to break down socio-economic and cultural stereotypes and barriers by concentrating on the youth in each parish, including collaboration with the Gospel Choirs, sports activities and high school cultural activities.

Partners in Prayer

Groups Involved: St. Thomas More (Brooklyn) and St. Agnes/Our Lady of Fatima Parishes (Cleveland)

Description: The foundation of this three-year project is to develop an inter-parish prayer program which will involve a retreat, a series of speakers and time together in prayer to enrich the life of each parishioner. The outcome will include a written remembrance from the project and hopefully serve as a model for the future.

Unity in Diversity

Groups Involved: St. Mary School (Collinwood), Holy Redeemer School (Cleveland) and St. Jerome School(Cleveland)

Description: The three Catholic Schools in the Collinwood area are involved in a collaborative effort to reduce friction between various ethnic and racial groups in the area. Students from the three schools will hold same-grade classes in two of the schools for the entire year. The goal of the project is to provide opportunities for teachers, parents and students of the 3 schools to interact academically and socially and to assist the present partnering plans. Activities will include combined field trips, sharing speakers and a joint year-end field trip.

Christ the King GEM Project

Groups Involved: Christ the King (East Cleveland) and St. Philomena (East Cleveland)

Description: East Cleveland has the highest poverty rate in Ohio and the highest incidence of juvenile crime in Cuyahoga County. Young African American Males are particularly at risk with regards to academic achievement as well as survival. The GEM project is designed for grades 3-5 to boost the academic achievement and longevity of African American males.

School to School Partnership

Groups Involved: Notre Dame Elementary School (Chardon) and St. Thomas/St. Philip School (Cleveland)

Description: This project was first piloted during the 95-96 school year as a collaboration of the two schools with the Commission on Catholic Community Action. The intent of the project is to bring the very different and diverse 8th graders of both schools together to learn to respect differences and rejoice in their similarities. The Gandhi-King-Day Program will again be used as the vehicle to celebrate cultural diversity, learn non-violent conflict resolution skills and interact with their peers.

Hearts to Homes

Groups Involved: Immaculate Conception Parish (Akron) and Sacred Heart (Wadsworth)
Contact Person: Rev. Arthur M. Snedecker

Description: The two parishes are forming a housing redevelopment organization that will raise funds, time and talent to purchase and rehabilitate housing in the Kenmore area in concert as partners with the beneficiaries. The project is not only one of physical rehabilitation but also of spiritual conversion.

Seven Parish Job Access/Home Improvement

Groups Involved: St. Sebastian , St. Hilliary, St. Vincent, St. Bernard, St. Martha, Annunciation and Guardian Angels Parishes (All from Akron)
Contact Person: Mr. Harold L. Hudson

Description: The project will develop a "job network" for the unemployed in the city. Parish volunteers will counsel and train job seekers on the position and employment readiness and convenient parish sites. There will be intake components, life skills, emotional readiness and job skills. The goal is to train and place approx. 150 people.

Kindergarten Partners

Groups Involved: Annunciation-St. John School (Akron) and Holy Family School (Stow)
Contact Person: Sr. Noel Marra, OSU

Description: The kindergartens from each school will be the focus of developing a community of diverse people which will include not only the children, but also the parents, siblings and school staff. The coming together will center around environmental education in teaching our responsibility to maintain the natural resources which God has given us in stewardship. This will not be a one-time effort but will be followed up and reinforced through their stay in the two schools.

Different Gifts and the Same Spirit

Groups Involved: St. John Bosco (Middleburg Hts) and St. Timothy (Cleveland)

Description: The project will revolve around strengthening the writing skills of the students by developing grade level pen pals. Increased understanding and appreciation for each school's environments through school visits by staff and students. Parish leaders will also have the opportunity to exchange visits and ideas.
