2. Leadership Training

Implementation of The Church in the City vision can only be achieved with the guidance of a dedicated and knowledgeable leadership. To improve the effectiveness and capabilities of our leaders, we recommend the following:

Utilize a Diocesan Social Action Training Institute to provide training and resourcing for parishes:

• address areas such as Catholic social teaching, community organizing,
• legislative advocacy, community economic development, housing and
• non-violent resolution of conflict
• develop collaboration with diocesan offices/training programs and local colleges, universities, seminaries
• develop opportunities for ecumenical cooperation.

Provide formative experiences about the realities of urban life and ministry, and The Church in the City vision, for people in suburban and rural settings.

Use an "Urban Plunge" to give people intensive on-site experiences of urban life and ministry.

Develop urban ministry pastoral training experiences for prospective pastors, pastoral leaders and other parish ministers using the coordinated efforts of urban parishes, diocesan offices and the seminary.

• emphasize the importance of understanding unique needs and cultural sensitivities in order to provide effective ministry
• provide formative residential experiences customized for individuals and coordinated through the Clergy Personnel Office
• incorporate these experiences in the formation programs at the seminary, permanent diaconate, and pastoral ministry certification program
• provide training for local parish volunteer leaders and youth leaders.
